This was a year filled with tragedies, as well as some heartwarming moments. TIME Magazine has picked the top 10 photos of 2014. Here they are:

1. The selfie to end all selfies

First in the top 10 photos of 2014 is this selfie image by Oscars show host Ellen Degeneres. Shot by Bradley Cooper at the 86th Academy Awards in Hollywood, California
Ellen Degeneres wanted to take a selfie with Meryl Streep at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. Bradley Cooper insisted he could do it better and a number of other celebrity legends also joined in. The result was this amazing Oscars selfie that Degeneres posted to her Twitter account.

2. Riots after Ferguson shooting

A man backs away as law enforcement officials close in and eventually detain him. He was part of the protests over the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager killed by a police officer, in Ferguson, Mo.
After Ferguson, Mo. police officer Darren Wilson fatally shot black teenager Michael Brown, protests ensued. A number of people were detained after the riots, including the man in the picture. Captured by photographer Whitney Curtis.
